DAY TWO:
With just three fit players, Ireland's Women secured the necessary points average to qualify for the quarter finals this morning. A 17-12 defeat to Romania ensured fourth place in Pool A, which earned Dwyer, Rockall and Woods a shot at 2nd seeds Switzerland.
Against the Swiss, just a point separated the sides with a minute remaining. The effort against strength in numbers took its toll again however and Ireland bowed out of the tournament.
The Men's side were another to leave blood on the court on Day 2 but came up short against a formidable Ukrainian side.

RESULT: - Sunday 26th June:
Women: Ireland 13-17 Switzerland (Quarter-Final),  Ireland 12-17 Romania (Pool A)
Men: Ireland 10-19 Ukraine (Quarter-Final)

DAY ONE RECAP: O'REILLY INJURY MARS SUCCESSFUL DAY

RESULTS - Saturday 25th June:
Women (Pool A): Ireland 17-12 Poland, Ireland 12-17 Austria, Ireland 12-15 Hungary.
Men (Pool A): Ireland 21-17 Georgia, Ireland 13-21 Spain, Ireland 16-11 Latvia.

A day of successful results for Ireland at the 3x3 European Championship Qualifiers in Andorra has been marred by a serious injury to Orla O’Reilly.

The Ireland captain has been ruled out of the rest of the qualifiers and the FIBA European Championships for Small Countries after breaking her wrist in a fall against Pool A opponents Hungary. The Senior Woman had been hoping to build on an impressive first round win over Poland and were tied with three minutes to go. Having a reserve to call upon allowed Hungary to force the pace and pull clear.

“Playing 3x3 with only three players is like playing the full 40 minutes of five-on-five without any substitutes,” said National 3x3 Programme Director Matthew Hall. “Orla will fly home for treatment on Monday and I know she’s disappointed but she’ll make a full recovery and she’ll come back stronger.”

Ireland’s Senior Women can still make the quarter-finals if they can score nine points or more in the morning’s final game against tournament fourth seeds Romania. That would guarantee them a better points-scored column than the third-ranked Polish.

The Men’s side banked two wins on Day One to guarantee themselves a berth in the last eight. The foursome enjoyed wins over Georgia and Latvia with the only blip coming against tournament favourites Spain.

Colin O’Reilly said “It’s actually nice in a way to walk off the court disappointed that you couldn’t get a result against a top ranked side. We’re not here to settle for the usual ‘have a last’ type mentality. We know we’re one win from a place at the European Championship proper and that would be a big step for us.”

Should either side make the semi-finals, they automatically qualify for the European Championship Finals in Budapest in September.

Meanwhile, Ireland Senior Women’s Head Coach Mark Scannell has confirmed that he won’t be able to replace Orla O’Reilly on the 12 player squad for the FIBA European Championships For Small Countries in Gibraltar. The competition is set to get underway on Tuesday June 28th.

“We’re very disappointed for Orla that she can’t make it and we’ve looked into bringing in another squad member but the deadline has passed so the reality is we’ll be working with the 11 players already booked to travel,” said Scannell.

“A lot of work has been going on with the rest of the squad and we’re well covered in the spots. Now it’s just about focusing on doing well on our return to Europe.”
