FIBA European Championships for Small Countries Semi-Final
Ireland 60, Armenia 74

Ireland’s bid for a second ever FIBA European Championships for Small Countries gold medal ended with a 74-60 defeat to Armenia in Chisinau, Moldova. Armenia’s naturalised American pairing of Bryant Dunston and Andre Spight combined for 34 points to do the bulk of the damage.
“A tough one to swallow,” said Colin O’Reilly. “We’ll have a lot of ‘what ifs’ about that game. We went up against an experienced team that stuck to their game plan and are a bit further down the line than we are.”

Ireland had an off night in terms of shooting as a second-quarter low of 25% field goal accuracy recovered to 32.4% by the final buzzer.

It had been a positive start with a 20-16 lead built for the first quarter. The sides were level on five occasions in the second quarter before the Armenians gave Ireland their first half-time deficit of the tournament.

It meant little to Paul Dick who set about regained the lead for his team mates in the third quarter. With 15 minutes left to play, Ireland were 46-44 up.

“I think we lost our discipline offensively midway through the third quarter,” said O’Reilly. “We seemed to turn it into a one-on-one game instead of moving the ball in the first half and trusting that we’d make our open shots.”

Ireland flat-lined for four minutes of the fourth and team fouls hampered any efforts to build up a head of steam.

“It’s a case of us going out and trying to bounce back and getting a win and finishing this tournament on a high. We’re representing the Irish basketball community and tomorrow is a chance to do that and come away with a 4-1 record which would be a good starting point for us,” said the Player Coach.
