U20 Ireland vs Netherlands – 17-07-16

Neither team could establish any rhythm until a beautiful delivery from Neary and equally pretty cut by Tummon set the tone.

A number of fouls allowed the Dutch back into the game but Blount's two drives and three slick assists left the defence at a loss.

The Netherlands stayed close with free throws but marvellous ball movement left Neary open to nail the three point shot and with 25 seconds left on the game clock and 5 on the shot clock, an O'Hanlon drive and dish left Neary open in the corner pocket to make the buzzer-beating three to finish 9-17 to Ireland.

The second quarter was choppy in a way that favoured The Netherlands.

With no field goals, defensive discrepancies continuously put the Dutch on the line and a mid-quarter rally of steals resulted in easy fast break buckets, bringing them within 3.

In the final seconds a blocking foul is called on Neary allowing Driessen to bring the Netherlands to within two at the close of the first half. (23-25)

An opening De Pree three started a Dutch surge, forcing two Irish time outs and establishing a lead of 39-32, but an aggressive O'Hanlon lay-up and a Tummon put-back forced a The Netherlands to take a time out of their own.

Great composure saw Ireland convert a 7-point deficit to a 7-point lead with Flood's 3-point bomb closing the quarter at 39-46 to Ireland.

The fourth quarter was neck and neck due to Ireland managing only 3 points.

With two minutes to go Kiernan sank two cool shots to extend the stale lead but in the penalty, Stolk tied the game at the line, 51-51, forcing overtime.

In the end, impressive mettle from Flood and O'Hanlon provided the bulk of the OT points to secure an Irish victory.

Final score: 58-64.

S. Flood (17), S. O'Hanlon (15), M. Neary (11), J.Tummon (8), J. Blount (6), E. Kiernan (4), C. Coomes (3).
