Ireland 24-68 Israel

The U-20 Irish women wrapped up a tough U-20 Women's European Championship Division B tournament Sunday with a 68-24 loss to Israel. While last place in the tournament was ensured before the match tipped off, pride was on the line as the Irish women measured themselves against a talented Israeli side.

Holli Dunne lead the way for Ireland with seven points, albeit off of 14% shooting. Poor shooting marked a disappointing night for the Irish as the team as a whole went 8/49.

From the start it was clear that nothing was falling for Ireland as a 5/26 first half prevented them from taking advantage of Israel's own early shooting struggles and saw a competitive first quarter that ended with the Irish facing a 10-point deficit turn into an uncatchable 27-point hole at the half after the Israeli's hit their stride and went on a 21-4 run in the quarter.

Ireland managed to hold Israel to only six points in the third, stepping up defensive pressure and forcing bad shots, but a 24-5 fourth quarter by the Israelis crushed any talks of a comeback and sent the U-20 women home with a whimper.

A combination of Israel's depth and team chemistry defined the women's dominance as they racked up 20 assists with 38 points coming from the bench.

While the Irish Women's first U-20 tournament in seven years proved that Ireland still has a ways to go before they can compete in Europe's highest echelons, leading performances from Aoife Whelan and Sarah Kenny over the entire competition proved that there is a foundation to build upon as the women set their sights upon a return to Montenegro for next year's tournament.
