FIBA U16 Menâs European Championship - Division B (Group B)
Ireland 50, England 65
Triaditza Hall, Sofia, BUL
Ireland were beaten 65-50 in the opening game of Division B of the FIBA U16 European Championships in Group C. Cian Heaphy and David Murray were returning to the Triaditza Hall a year after they beat Norway there in last yearâs competition, but England have only lost once to an Irish team at this level and pulled clear in the fourth quarter.
Nabil Muradâs squad opening their account with gusto as James Beckom scored eight points in a positive first quarter. Darragh OâSullivanâs alley-oop had Ireland three points clear after 8:30 before the English got their noses in front 16-15.
Englandâs U16âs were welcoming back three players whoâd featured in their âAâ Division Campaign in 2015, including Jacob Round who finished this win with 21 points. The 6â4 guardâs break away dunk put England 38-25 clear at half time. Theyâd hit four three-pointers in the second quarter to push clear in the highest scoring period of the game.
Ireland needed settled nerves and strong defence to make a game of it in the third quarter. Murray and Max Amadasun combined for half of their sideâs rebound haul with Amadasun also putting up three blocks in the game. It provided a platform for a 9-0 run from OâSullivan and Beckom in the third quarter to help them reduce the margin to 48-38 with ten minutes left.
David Murray helped reduce the margin to five points in the final quarter and Cian Heaphy kept driving to finish with eight points, but a 3:36 dry spell hampered Irelandâs chances of building momentum.
Next up for Ireland is a Scottish side theyâve already beaten at the National Basketball Arena this summer.
