Ireland 66, Hungary 90
Sofia, Bulgaria

After splitting the opening 2 games versus fellow home nations England and Scotland, Ireland’s chances of progressing to the quarter finals were dealt a blow in losing to a strong Hungary side in Sofia.

Max Amadasun got Ireland off to a good start with two early baskets but the team struggled to contain the 6’11” Mate Fazekas who would have a strong opening period, registering seven points as Hungary pushed their lead out to 14 points. The talented James Beckom came into the game as the tournament’s second leading scorer and two late scores from him cut into the Hungarian lead to make it a 10 point game at the end of the first.

Kris Arcilla was returning from injury and had two key baskets for Ireland in the second quarter as they fought their way back into the game. Momentum was with the Irish and Beckom again showed his class with six second-quarter points as Ireland cut the lead to 5 points at the half, 46-41.

The second quarter would have filled Ireland with hope but Hungary would go on to dominate the second half. Adam Somogyi was at the heart of everything for the Hungarians, the games top scorer with 25 points also dished out 8 assists to go along with 4 rebounds, a block and a steal as Hungary went on to win 90-66. Ireland now have a day off before they play Macedonia on Monday.
