FIBA U16 Women’s European Championship - Division B Classification Game for 5th Place
Ireland 50, Greece 57
Arena Antonio Alexe, Oradea, ROU

The Ireland U16 Women’s basketball squad will arrive home from Romania as the most successful underage side ever after a sixth place finish at the FIBA European Championships in Oradea. A final day defeat to Greece could do little to take the shine off an historic tournament which saw them make the quarter finals and secure a top six finish with a win over Luxembourg.

Greece’s 57-50 win was a measure of revenge for defeat in the seventh place classification game at last year’s tournament. Four of their 2015 squad went on to secure promotion to Division ‘A’ with the U18’s squad. The class of 2016 flew out of the blocks in the first quarter, taking a decisive 21-9 lead after 10 minutes.

Dayna Finn, Enya Masterson, Maeve Phelan and Niamh Masterson were all back for their second U16 campaign and were in the starting five alongside Bronagh Power Cassidy. Finn had five points in the first quarter and baskets from Annaliese Murphy and Ella Mccloskey helped put Ireland on a surer footing in the second quarter.

Ireland trailed 31-19 at the break, but it was game-on in the third as Ireland put together a stunning 10-0 run in just 1:40. Masterson, Finn and Power Cassidy got the baskets with all four assists coming from Maeve Phelan.

Greece rallied to lead 43-35 heading into the fourth quarter and Ioanna Chatzivasileiou and Ismini Prapa combined for 15 steals to help them see out the game.

Annaliese Murphy finished the day with 14 points while Ireland consolidated their top ten ranking in the tournament for rebounds, assists and steals. Dayna Finn’s 11 rebounds per game saw her rank third overall while Enya Maguire was second for assists with 3.8 apg.

“Everyone has contributed this over the past two years,” said Maeve Coleman. “Our whole team, the parents and the players have put in 100%. This is our seventh trip away with this squad and I think it’s been reflected in our performance in this tournament. It’s nice to have set a new record.”
