Ireland will bring down the curtain on the European Championship summer with a fight for 19th place in the FIBA U16 European Championships. Nabil Muradís side will face Denmark following a 73-64 defeat to Norway in the 17-20 classification game.

Max Amadasunís defensive performances had seen him rise to second in ranking for blocks and third for rebounds in the tournament.

An ankle injury picked up against Luxembourg ruled him out of the game and Norway capitalised to lead 21-9 for the first quarter.

Ireland looked in major trouble midway through the second quarter. They trailed 31-16 heading into a period of the game theyíd struggled with in the tournament.

This time around a 10-2 run put them right back into contention.

James Beckom kick started things with successive scores before David Murray and and Cian Heaphy got their first baskets of the game.

Scott Hannigan capped a fine half to top out the run and the last act of the period was Kris Arcillaís two points from the free-throw line.

Norway led 36-30 at half time but were sharper from the restart for an 8-0 run and Ireland didnít look in the quarter until Darragh OíSullivanís three-pointer.

The Norwegians were pulling clear behind 22 points in 27 minutes from Point Guard Sigurd Orange and were 59ó42 clear with ten minutes left.

David Murray sparked a 10 point recovery with a three-point play and combined with Beckom to clean up the boards and keep Norway scoreless.

It was another doughty court quarter from the Irish and OíSullivanís three-pointer reduced the margin to single digits with 02:38 left.

It was Irelandís second 20-point quarter of the game, but team fouls on both sides slowed momentum and allowed Norway to eke out the win.
