FIBA U16 Men's European Championship - Division B Classification Game for 19th Place
Ireland 71 Denmark 81
Arena Armeec II, Sofia, BUL, 11:45
It was a tough way to end a long tournament.
Ireland's U16 Men had just eight available players as they took on Denmark in their final game of the FIBA European Championships.
The squad will arrive home from Bulgaria with a 20th place classification and the knowledge they emptied the tank in today's 71-81 defeat.
Robert Cahill was added to an injury list including Max Amadasun and Jack Moran and Denmark looked keen as they raced into a 26-11 lead for the first quarter.
The Irish left standing had to empty the tank across the board.
Cian Heaphy added four assists and five steals to 15 points. David Murray finished the game with 3 blocks as well as 13 points and James Beckom and Scott Hannigan combined for 30 points and 10 offensive rebounds.
Denmark conceded 25 points in the second quarter and knew Ireland were far from a beaten ticket. Their lead was back to 47-36 at half time and the sides were on par in the third quarter.
A 10-0 run had Ireland back to within two baskets with 2:12 left but the effort had taken it's toll - A 2-6 record was enough for 20th place.
