Basketball Ireland Women’s Super League:

There were big celebrations in Laois this weekend as Portlaoise Panthers secured their first win of the Women's Super League away to Meteors thanks, in no small part, to a superb display from Necole Sterling who netted 26 points for her side on the night.

Speaking afterwards, Head Coach Hunor Harkai was thrilled with his side's win, but added that the result really came down to the strength of their defence.

“I am very happy with the win,” he said. “We played defence very well and because of this, we had a good advantage at the end of the first quarter and had a lot of control by the end of the second. We played the game our way, and now this win will give our players more confidence going forward. It will motivate all of us.

“We play Courtyard Liffey Celtics at home next, which will be a tough game but I know our home supporters – our sixth player – will be there to cheer us on for what will be an exciting match.”

Elsewhere, a fantastic display from Jazmen Boone (21), Sorcha Tiernan (20) and Aine O’Connor (20) drove Courtyard Liffey Celtics to a hard-fought win over Pyrobel Killester while earlier on in the week, Ambassador UCC Glanmire continued their unbeaten run with a win over Singleton SuperValu Brunell.

Basketball Ireland Men's Super League

SSE Airtricity Moycullen made it two wins in a row in the Super League on Sunday afternoon as they overcame Commercial.ie Éanna 73-60 in The Jes in Galway.

For Head Coach John Cunningham, the last two wins, coupled with a win against Belfast Star in the Hula Hoops National Cup, is finally proof that they are reaping the rewards of their hard labour at training.

“I’m delighted, really delighted,” he said. “It’s good to get a win, we’ve won our last three games now including the Cup game and that’s a good reward for the guys for the work they are putting in.

“We’re learning how to play at this level, we’re pushing our way up in the League and we’re learning how to win.”
