The Ireland Senior Women’s team meanwhile had their second home game of the weekend, as they lined out at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght for Game 2 of the Mardyke Series. Coming off the back of Friday night’s 63-69 point loss to the visitors down in Cork, a determined and focused Irish side hit the court today and carved out victory in emphatic fashion.




Superb performances from Claire Melia, Claire Rockall and Mimi Clarke in particular saw Ireland take an early 24-11 lead at the end of the first, which they stretched to a 40-26 point lead at the half. Despite a run from Iceland in the second half, Ireland continued to dominate the scoreboard, with good shooting from Danielle O’Leary and Amy Waters adding to the tally to win in convincing fashion in the end, 74-59.

IRELAND Senior Women’s tip had to settle for second best in the first game of the Mardyke Series against Iceland in Cork this evening as they fell to a 63-69 point defeat at the death.

In an absolutely thrilling game, a Michelle Clarke and Gráinne Dwyer inspired Ireland matched Iceland score for score, going in with a two-point lead at the end of the first, and trailing by just one point (27-28) at half time. 




Clarke came into her own in the third quarter, making it rain three-pointers at the Mardyke Arena UCC and that, coupled with hard work by Claire Rockall and Fiona O’Dwyer kept Ireland’s noses in front at the end of the third, 49-47.

Iceland were determined though, and stand out star Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir swung momentum in their favour, driving them on a run which Ireland just couldn’t find a response to and with one minute left on the clock, Iceland took a 61-63 point lead and finished strong in the dying seconds to secure a 63-69 point victory in the end. The sides face each other once more at 5pm on Saturday at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght.
