RECAP: Ireland U18 Men 55-73 MKD

  • Jul 30,2017

It was another tough day on the court for the Ireland Under 18 men’s basketball team this afternoon, as they lost out 73-55 to MKD at the FIBA U18 Men’s European Championship Division B.

The team came into the game off the back of two losses against Belgium and Switzerland on Friday and Saturday, and despite getting off to a much stronger start this afternoon, just could not keep up the pressure for the full four quarters.

A superb display from Sean Jenkins, particularly in the third quarter saw him close the gap on the scoreboard to just six points at one stage, but the MKD firepower of Luka Stojanovski and Martin Trsunov was just too much for the Irish overall, as they combined for 37 points.

A determined opening quarter saw Jenkins, Donal Ring, Oisin O’Reilly and McCann all get on the scoring early on, with MKD just keeping their noses in front, 16-14, at the buzzer. A much stronger second quarter from MKD saw them dominate the Irish at both ends of the court, with the boys in green struggling to convert their possession to finish the quarter 37-26 behind.

A Jenkins-inspired third quarter saw Ireland take command of proceedings, with the Cork player going on a superb run of 9 points to close the gap back to six. Stojanovski and Trsunov were on hand though to keep the scoring ticking over for MKD and they still held the lead, 52-44 at the end of the third. Despite good scoring from Lanipekun, Jenkins and McCann in the fourth, the damage had already been done and MKD ran out 73-55 winners in the end.

“Our lack of discipline was a big decider in today’s game and it invariably cost us,” said Head Coach, Conor James. “Jenkins took a lot on his shoulders today, and it was hard for the lads out there. The day off tomorrow will do us good, and it will be a much-needed rest before we face Estonia on Tuesday.”

The boys in green will have a much-deserved rest day tomorrow (Monday), before playing Estonia in Game 4 of their group games on Tuesday (August 1st).
