A blistering second quarter display from Bosnia & Herzegovina gave them the impetus to ease past a battling Irish under 16 side in their Division B Group C encounter on Monday evening.

Their brilliant 31 point quarter rocked Ireland who had battled back superbly from an early deficit to lead at the end of a see-saw opening period.

Tiernan Howe’s three pointer got the Irish off the mark, bringing them back level after early Bosnian dominance and from there it was a real arm-wrestle. Trailing by five with just over two minutes left to the buzzer Ireland’s defense stepped up a level and their greater ability under the boards helped them to reel off nine unanswered points to take a 21-17 advantage at the end of the first period.

While Ireland were far superior in their offensive rebounding and managed to break even on the defensive end, it was their close range shooting that eventually proved to be their downfall – or rather, their inability to match the Bosnian’s brilliant 63% shooting from two point range. A Tiernan Howe three pointer was the highlight of the quarter for the Irish but they could not match the physically stronger Bosnian’s in the paint and they fell to a 33-48 deficit at the break.

The third quarter failed to bring any respite as Bosnia Herzegovina pushed on, at one stage jumping to a twenty-nine point lead, in no small part thanks to the brilliance of point guard Kosta Kondic.

Ireland kept battling though and with Nathan Moore impressing – he would eventually finish as the game’s top scorer – they staged a mini-revival to close the gap somewhat but Bosnia closed out the quarter with a 49-74 lead. A high scoring final quarter was no consolation for the Irish as they fell to their second defeat of the campaign.

“We were unable to sustain a strong first quarter performance and Bosnia did what good teams do – they punished our mistakes. We’ve got to regroup and get planning for the Czech Republic,” was the verdict of coach Pat Price before they head into their final game against the table topping Czechs.
