Basketball Ireland Detailed Results: November 4-5th

Basketball Ireland Men’s Super League:

UCD Marian bounded their way to the top of the table, leap frogging the challenge of Garvey’s Tralee Warriors in style down in Kerry.

A superb display from UCD’s Mike Garrow and Mike Nedulskis sent the visitors into a 10-point lead at the end of the first, and it was one they wouldn’t relinquish throughout the game, with Barry Drumm and Dan James leading the team well from the top of the key.

Despite a huge third quarter from Tralee, UCD’s sharp shooting just proved to be too much in the last, as they outscored the homeside 23-5 in the fourth quarter to win out 92-63.

UCC Demons meanwhile travelled to Colaiste Éanna on Saturday evening, and despite a third quarter run from the home team, Demons looked comfortable throughout to take the win.

Meanwhile, Pyrobel Killester ran out winners over Maree in Clontarf, while DCU Saints clocked another victory with a win over KUBS. Belfast Star just lost out to Black Amber Templeogue at the death, while Moycullen scooped a big home win against Griffith College Swords Thunder.

Mark Ingle’s charges asserted their dominance over the game from the off with top scoring from Tiffany Corselli and Sarah Woods edging them beyond reach of the Cork side.

In the other game of the weekend, Pyrobel Killester picked up their third win in a closely contested match against Maxol WIT Wildcats on Saturday evening. With nothing separating the sides, it was Killester’s Aisling McCann who dug deep at the end of the third quarter to produce a much-needed three pointer to put her side up 52-50 going into the last, and the home team pushed on from there to win out, 72-65.

Basketball Ireland Men’s Division 1

There will be big celebrations in Dublin Lions this week as they notched their first win of the season in cracking style in Clondalkin on Saturday, running out 119-86 point winners over LYIT Donegal.

Superb scoring across the board from Mo Sabic, Igor Markiewicz, Tomas Mikalauskas, Adam O'Reilly and Toms Ludbarzs powered the Dubliners into a huge 73-42 point lead at half time. Despite the best efforts of LYIT - including a whopping 34 point game from Chaz Watler - momentum was firmly with the Lions and they roared home to the highest scoring win of the league so far this season.

Elsewhere, Ballincollig bounced back from their loss against Fr Mathews to overcome Ej Sligo All Stars on the road, while IT Carlow Basketball finished strong to secure the win against Ulster University Elks.

Scotts Lakers St Paul's Killarney also got back to winning ways, running out 89-60 point winners over Titans at home.

Basketball Ireland Women’s Division 1 Champions Trophy quarter finals:

The first two quarter finals of the Women's Division One Champions Trophy got underway at the weekend, with UL Huskies and Griffith College Swords Thunder having to wait until overtime to decide their contest in a cracking game in Limerick. Brilliant displays from Rachel Sheehan and Cathy Campbell eventually saw them edge Thunder by four in the end, but there were phenomenal displays at the other end of the court from Kristine Miller and Kelsey Carey and, despite being on the wrong side of that result, have certainly laid down a staunch marker for things to come.

It was a close one in Cork as well meanwhile, with Fr Mathews just pipping Meteors by five in the end. With nothing separating the teams at the half, scores from Amy Fitzgerald and Olivia Depuy helped secure Mathews a semi-final spot.
