RECAP: Ireland U16 Men lose out to a sharp Czech side
August 08, 2019
It was a tough opening game at the 2019 FIBA U16 Men European Championship Division B, where Ireland U16 men lost to a long and fast Czech side 75-44.
From the off, the Czech side showed their colours, they were very aggressive defensively forcing turnovers and finishing in the open court. Mobi Kegwuruka got Ireland off the mark and assisted by ND Okafor who finished with a double double, 14 points and 16 rebounds, a Sean Pollmann-Daamen three and a nice finish by Ryan Djoussa were not enough to keep the game close in the opening quarter, it was 24 – 9 to the Czech.
The second quarter saw Ireland struggle to contain the two Ondrej’s, Hustak and Svec, who seemed to be able to score at will. Michael O Mahony and two quick scores from Okafor were not enough to get Ireland going as the Czech side had an answer every time. It was a mountainous 44 – 17 at the half to the Czech Republic.
The third quarter saw some spurts of energy for Ireland and with Tim and Sean Pollmann-Daamen creating some tempo on defence, again it was Okafor who carried the offensive load and Ireland were 29 – 67 behind going into the fourth.
The fourth quarter started well with Nelson Fatso Toumo getting hot, he had 8 points in this quarter of his twelve total. Ireland started to get a handle to the Czechs bigs and were less turnover prone. It finished Ireland 44 – 75 with that increased defensive effort paying off and Ireland winning the quarter by 7.
Head coach Pat Price “It was a tough first day but we need to learn, adjust and proceed. I loved our second half effort and our refusal to quit. Georgia – who we face tomorrow - is also quite talented, and they should be another great challenge for the boys."
Tomorrow’s game will be streamed live on the Basketball Ireland Facebook page from 3pm.
