RECAP: Ireland U16 men beat Georgia
August 09, 2019
It was all square after the first quarter with ND Okafor starring for Ireland again, he finished with an impressive 16 points and 17 rebounds before Mobi Ikegwuruka, who top scored with 25 points, stepped up in the second to give Ireland a small 4 point lead at the half 33-29.
Ireland's first half was a story of made free throws -11/11 and how much more composure they showed from yesterday. Michael O'Mahony and ND Okafor got Ireland off the mark. Milo Herbst and Darragh Ferguson made a strong impression on their introduction as did Tim Pollmann-Daamen with some excellent defence and getting on the scoreboard, it was 16-16 going into the second.
To start the second quarter that man, Mobi Ikegwuruka got an 'and 1' to put a little daylight between the teams. Ryan Djoussa scored on a put back and Georgia called a timeout to regroup. A quiet offensive spell happened after that but the zone defence was causing Georgia all sorts of problems and it was the duo of Okafor and Ikegwuruka that finished the quarter well to put 4 between the teams, 33-29 at the half
But it was the second half where Ireland shined, a fantastic 25 point third quarter was topped by a final 30 point quarter to put real daylight between the teams. It was a fantastic performance across the board from the team who were rewarded for being aggressive in attacking the basket and making free throws when fouled. Ireland didn’t have it their own way all game as a 90 second spell of hot 3 point shooting by the Georgians towards the end of the third quarter brought them right back into the game, trailing by 9 going into the fourth quarter.
Ireland, however, were not to be denied, eight different players scored in the fourth with Herbst and Wede Esajobor finding their range from three, but it was the defensive effort shown in keeping the Georgians to just 9 points that will please the management team. Ireland made 28 free throws during the game and secured 57 rebounds showcasing the effort levels these men displayed for the forty minutes, the game finished 88-58 to Ireland. After the game head coach Pat Price stated “Delighted for the boys. It was a huge task coming on the back of a very difficult first day, so the manner in which we carried ourselves for the 40 minutes was as much a statement of character as it was a brilliant performance. Our bench was outstanding and Michael O’Mahony’s leadership in the last 24 hours played a massive role. We’ll rest up and prepare for Portugal tomorrow.”
Tomorrow's game against Portugal will be shown on Basketball Ireland's Facebook page at 7.30pm.
