Important update for Irish international squads
March 15, 2020
The EPC (Elite Performance Committee) at Basketball Ireland has issued the below statement for all Irish international squads regarding their preparations for European Championships in the coming weeks.
Head coaches, members of the management team, players and parents are asked to adhere to the guidelines below.
“The EPC wishes to reassure you that we are working closely with Basketball Ireland, FIBA and Government directives to follow all measures being asked of us to play our part in helping to contain the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Following our EPC meeting yesterday (Saturday, March 14th, 2020), we would like to share the following with you so that you can further share this with your squad:
Further to a FIBA Europe Board meeting held on Friday (March 13th), the FIBA Board agreed to continue to monitor the current situation and decide by mid-April any possible re-scheduling or relocation of the two Small Countries Championships of women and men, due to be held in Cyprus and Ireland respectively.
The FIBA Europe Board also agreed to make a decision on/by Saturday, May 2nd, 2020 regarding the status of the remaining European Championship Youth tournaments.
Following on from the advice earlier this week to proceed with common sense and caution around any further travel bookings for preparation tournaments, the BI Board subsequently suspended all basketball competitions and activities from Thursday, March 12th, until Sunday, March 29th, 2020 inclusive. Please note that this also includes national team practice sessions.
Yesterday, (March 14th, 2020), the EPC agreed that the best course of action is to cancel the involvement of all Irish squads travelling to friendly tournaments that are due to take place in the coming month - up to and including Sunday, April 12th.
As you all appreciate, this is an unprecedented event and it will likely continue to be dealt with in extraordinary fashion. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and issue updates and advice. We have players’ and management teams’ safety and integrity as our utmost priority.”
