Players sought for Ireland U-20 teams

  • Oct 21,2015

Basketball Ireland’s Elite Performance Committee is seeking expressions of interest from players to represent Ireland at the 2016 FIBA Europe U20 Championships.

Approval has been granted to establish both men’s and women’s squads, subject to viability. The squads are to be based on the self-funding model.

The announcement was made in the first edition of the EPC newsletter.

EPC Joint Chair Bernard O’Byrne said:

“We’re aware from talking to players that there is a desire to enter teams into next year’s European U20 Championships. We’d reiterate that a self-funded model is not what we’re working towards, however we don’t want to stand in the way of players who want to play at the highest level. If the demand is there and the quality is of a sufficient standard, we will put the necessary structures in place. “

Host nations for both the Men’s and Women’s U20 European Championships are set to be announced by FIBA Europe in late November.

Ireland last competed at U20 level in 2008, when the U20 Men travelled to Romania and the U20 Women competed in Poland.

  • Players must be under the age of 20 on or after January 1st, 2016.
  • All players must hold a valid Irish passport.

  • The deadline for expressions of interest by players is Wednesday October 28th at 5pm.
  • All interested players should email their interest to
