Tough times at Tajfun

Tough times at Tajfun

Hibernia Basketball suffered another tough defeat on the road in the FIBA Europe Cup as Slovenian champions Tajfun powered home in the fourth quarter to win 82-55. The game was the Irish combined club side’s second of three successive away trips in Group F.

“It was an 11 point game with eight minutes to go and that’s difficult to do in any European Competition, especially on the road,” said Player Coach Colin O’Reilly.  “Yes, it was a heavy defeat and we’re not interested in moral victories but we went a lot deeper into the game and it was a better performance.”

Without the injured Jason Killeen and the unavailable Martins Provizors, Hibernia had little to offer on offensive rebounds allowing Tajfun to apply pressure on the perimeter shooters. Conor Grace landed his first three-point effort but Hibernia managed only a 27% shooting return in the first half while Tajfun enjoyed twice as many rebounds.

Roy Downey was the game’s top scorer with 16 points and the 21 year old also served up the one of the highlights of the game when he drove hard inside and flicked the ball behind  his head to Keelan Cairns for three points.

The third quarter was Hibernia’s best. Grace and Lehmon Colbert sparked a 9-0 run. Luke Thompson’s jump shot and a three-point buzzer beater from Downey tightened the game further.

That was before tired Irish legs handed the game to the Slovenians. Tajfun lined up at the three-point line in time and space to pull clear down the stretch.
