Open Trials for Ireland Senior Women

Open Trials for Ireland Senior Women

  • Dec 15,2015
Open trials have been announced for the Ireland Senior Women’s Squad for players who want to step up to international standard. The first trial will take place on Monday December 28th at the Mardyke Arena in Cork from 11am.

It will be Head Coach Mark Scannell’s first opportunity to work with players ahead of the European Championship for Small Countries in Gibraltar in 2016.

Speaking about the trials, the Cork man said: “I know only too well how far we got in our last campaign and the years lost and it will take some time to bring us back to where we were. We have to fast track that process and we have enough potential to work with.”

In other news, Grace O’Sullivan has also been appointed as Team Manager to the Irish Women’s squad. Originally from Fairhill in Cork, O’Sullivan became National League Head Coach with Brunell in the late eighties before moving into international basketball in 1993.  She spent over seven years working with underage programmes and was Head Coach to Ireland’s U16 Women at the European Championships in 2000.

Speaking about her appointment, O’Sullivan said: “The players we’ll be working with will be expected to play like professionals while balancing their work, lifestyle and home lives. My job will be to manage the programme to make sure it’s as easy for them as possible. There are a lot of challenges around this programme in terms of finance, but we’ll be doing everything we can to make sure the players can just turn up and do their job and play basketball.”

Full details on the European Championships for Small Countries will be announced in February.
