EPC Appoint Technical Consultant

The Elite Performance Committee of Basketball Ireland has appointed a Technical Consultant to work with its International Programmes in 2015-2016.

The role will be taken up by Dr Tim Rice, an American with over 25 years’ experience working in basketball and who has recently relocated to Galway.

The appointment is in line with Basketball Ireland’s Strategic Plan, published in November, which identifies the appointment of a Head of Performance and a Technical Director as a key project by 2016/2017.

Dr Rice will produce a report to the EPC which will seek to inform them on the recommended next steps towards the recruitment of a Technical Director by open competition and which technical direction Basketball Ireland should follow in coming years. He will serve as a Technical Consultant in a pro-bono capacity until July 2016.

A statement released by the Elite Performance Committee who made the appointment says:

“The Strategic Plan was the work of the entire basketball community and its stated goals include the arrival at an ‘Irish-style’ of playing international basketball. Tim will be tasked with assembling a report in pursuit of this. It is a useful step towards meeting our objectives and working towards the appointment of a Technical Director.”

Speaking about his appointment, Dr Rice said: “I’m obviously very excited to volunteer for this. I think that what I’m going to be doing is basically going around and observing underage teams and giving my feedback and taking a look at where the game is here and bringing my perspective to that.”

“My motto is Telling You The Truth About Your Team so I’ll be honest in my evaluation and I know what the EPC are looking for.”More information is available about his mentoring here.

He has also worked extensively with Boston College Women’s Basketball Head Coach, Erik Johnson.

“Tim’s counsel and advice was pivotal to my success in building a high-level competitive basketball program from the ground up,” said Johnson. “The success Tim helped me attain in my first head coaching job allowed me to obtain my dream job as the head coach at Boston College in the ACC.”

“Tim has a unique combination of expertise in X’s and O’s, teaching progressions, practice planning, system strategy, managing players and staff, and in so many other areas of running a basketball program.  Best of all, his strong moral compass pervades every thought and idea that he has.  He has helped me recognize “the right way” to do things both on and off the court.”
