Waterford Wildcats Mourn Loss Of Founding Member

  • Jan 20,2016
Basketball Ireland would like to express sincere condolences to the family of the late Evelyn Hearn, late of Waterford Road, Carrig-on-Suir and Springmount, Tramore, Co. Waterford,

John Hayes of Waterford Wildcats issued the following statement following her passing:

"Blue Monday saw the passing of Miss Evelyn Hearn, a top class French teacher, a scratch golfer and founder member of Waterford Wildcats Basketball Club. Some 35 years ago the Mercy Sisters built a beautiful sports hall next to their secondary school in Ozanam Street. Evelyn, a young teacher in the Mercy, and many of her teaching friends in the city started playing basketball in the sports hall for fun. A short while later the teachers’ team entered the local basketball league. Some students in the Mercy asked if she would coach them in the schools league. With Evelyn's excellent teaching and coaching, the Mercy became a major force in schools basketball. Out of that success the ‘Wildcats’ club was formed and Evelyn's teacher friends in the presentation and the Ursuline in particular were sending their best players to play with Wildcats. "

While putting endless hours into coaching outside her long day teaching, Evelyn still managed to become one of Waterford’s finest golfers.

The Wildcats success story is well documented since those early days, in particular, five Super League titles in succession - A record no team has come close to and possibly never will. Many other coaches have played a huge part in Wildcats success, but you ask any of the great Wildcats from that hugely successful period who was the best to teach the skills, fundamentals and discipline of their favourite sport, they will give just one answer - Miss Hearn.

From those early days hundreds and hundreds of young girls have played for Wildcats and their school teams, indeed many of her students have played for Ireland down trough the years. All of them should raise a basketball to the heavens to say thanks to the wonderful Miss Hearn. May she rest in peace.
