FIBA European Championship Draws Made

FIBA European Championship Draws Made

  • Jan 22,2016
The draws for the FIBA European Championships were made  this morning, with eight Irish squads set to compete across the continent this Summer.

Ireland’s Senior Women will compete in the FIBA Women’s European Championships for Small Countries in Gibraltar from June 28th to July 3rd. Mark Scannell’s side have been drawn in Group A alongside Moldova and Wales. Gibraltar, Andorra and Malta complete Group B.

A group win would qualify Ireland directly for the semi-finals with second place good enough for a quarter-final berth. Speaking about the draw, Coach Scannell said: “Moldova will be tough and we know a little bit about Wales. The main thing is that knowing the opposition will kick start our scouting and help with the overall planning.”

Ireland’s Senior Men will be competing at the FIBA European Championships for Small Countries for a fifth time. Moldova is the host nation in 2016, where the Irish have been drawn in Group A with San Marino, Malta and Gibraltar. 2012 and 2014 champions Andorra are in Group B with Armenia, Wales, Monaco and hosts Moldova.

"The draw has added extra excitement as we can see what we're preparing for," said Ireland Senior Men's Coach Colin O'Reilly. "For the players it's a case of continuing to perform at a high level for their clubs. Playing in high level club games gives the coaching staff an opportunity to see players in pressurised situations which we can use when putting together our player profiles to help build our squad for the training camps."

Ireland are also returning to action at U20 level in 2016. The U20 Men’s squad are in Greece from July 15th where a tough Group C awaits include Great Britain, hosts Greece, the Netherlands, Kosova and Albania. The U20 Women’s squad have also been drawn against the hosts. Emer Foley’s side play home side Montenegro and Slovenia in the group phase.

The U18 Men are the only other squad who will have to face a home atmosphere. Macedonia are the hosts and opponents in Group A alongside Bulgaria, Hungary, Cyprus and Poland.

The U18 Women’s Squad will face Estonia, Greece, England and Macedonia when they go to Sarajevo to contest Group C on July 23rd.

The Ireland U16 squads have both drawn England and Scotland in their groups. The U16 Women will also have to meet Finland, Bulgaria and Bosnia and Herzegovina when they head to Romania in August. For the U16 Men it’s Israel, Macedonia and Hungary rounding out the group.
