Dublin Primary Schools' Mini-Basketball 2016 Championships
May 23, 2016
96 teams, 1162 players and 192 children officiating in Dublin Primary Schools Mini-Basketball Championships
The 2016 Championships are organised on a Tournament basis â Boys, Girls, Mixed; Senior and Junior with A Sections for teams with two or more Basketball Ireland club players and B Sections for one or no Basketball Ireland club players.
The rules of the Championships ensure that all involved get the same court time while acknowledging the positive aspects of competition by awarding Plaques to the overall winning team and runner-up team in each Tournament.
Children act as timekeepers and scorekeepers while the Dublin Officials Association provides referees. Commissioners are appointed to oversee the event each day.
The ethos of Mini-Basketball is defined in the PSMNC brochure as âenabling children to learn, play and enjoy basketball in a supportive environmentâ. Furthermore the brochure goes on to emphasise the âimportance of age appropriate fundamental movement and basketball skills developmentâ while avoiding the ânegative aspects of competition for childrenâ. Samples of negative aspects outlined in the PSMNC brochure include; playing the best players only, complex tactics, early elimination structures and trying to win matches at the expense of player developmentâ.
The Mini-Basketball brochure, teaching videos, the Mini3on3 booklet, Rules, Scoresheet & Guidelines and a new Refereeing Video â can all be downloaded on www.primaryschoolsminibasketballireland.com
