Ireland picked up their second win in three games in Group C of the FIBA U16 European Championships with a 70-41 win over Bulgaria in Oradea, Romania. Ella Mccluskey sat out the game but the 11 players who saw minutes all contributed points to the scoreboard as Maeve Colemanâs side kept themselves in the hunt for the higher classification games.
The starters responded to calls from Coach Coleman for an improved shooting performance with four successful shots in a row in the first quarter as a three-point opener from Enya Maguire was followed up with successes from Bronagh Power-Cassidy, Maeve Phelan and Dayna Finn. Then it was the turn of the substitutes as Maeve OâSeaghdha and Abby Flynn ensured a 14-12 lead for the first quarter.
Big defence helped stretch the advantage to 31-19 for the half. Ireland finished the first half with 12 steals and forced Bulgaria into 36 turnovers in total while Maguireâs second triple capped an 8-0 run in the second quarter.
Ireland were double-scores at 38-19 midway through the third quarter courtesy of baskets from Finn, Masterson and Power-Cassidy. It was a 7-0 run but the best scoring was saved until the final period as the squad racked up 22 points in 10 minutes through eight different scorers. Abby Flynn hit five points in the fourth and had six steals in the game while Enya Maguire threw a remarkable eight assists. The game high went to Niamh Masterson with 17 points.
Having shot at 24% in their opening two games, Irelandâs field goal return had improved to 35.8% on this occasion.
