FIBA U16 Women's European Championships - Group C
Ireland 50, Bosnia & Herzegovina 56
Ireland are on two wins and two losses in Group C of the FIBA U16 Womenâs European Championships after a tough 56-50 defeat to Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Nine points from Bronagh Power Cassidy helped Ireland out to a 10 point lead in the first quarter before the Bosnians pulled it back to 18-11 by the end of the period. Power Cassidy was called upon again to snap a 5-0 run in the second quarter and Ireland had to work hard to defend their lead. Baskets from Dayna Finn and Maeve OâSeaghdha contributed to a 26-25 lead for the half.
An Irish dry spell early in the third quarter put them 5 points down before Niamh Masterson subbed in, grabbed an offensive rebound and snapped a 6-0 run. Dayna Finn hit Irelandâs first three-pointer and further scores from Masterson and Maeve Phelan kept Ireland within a basket. It was Power Cassidy who regained the lead for Ireland before Mastersonâs jump shot had Ireland 41-37 clear with a quarter left.
Irelandâs last lead in the game came with seven minutes to go as Dayna Finn completed a double-double The impressive Gabriela Viskovic finished with 21 points and hit three baskets in a row to put her side in control.
Maeve Phelan got an equaliser with 2:44 on the clock, but Ireland left 14 points behind them at the free-throw line and a drop in field goal accuracy hurt Irelandâs chances of a comeback.
