Ireland 59, FYR Macedonia 71
Triaditza Hall, Sofia, BUL
Ireland put in a battling performance against FYR Macedonia in their Group B clash at the FIBA U16 European Championships, but ultimately went down 71-59 to rule out a place in the quarter-finals.
Nabil Muradâs squad held a clear edge on the boards in the opening quarter and were out-rebounding at a rate of 2:1. David Murray, Max Amadasun and David Beckom all scored second-chance points to keep Ireland in the hunt.
Both sides had come into the game with a 1-2 record, but the Macedonians had acquitted themselves well against Group B leaders Israel and Hungary and soon imposed a 26-19 lead for the first quarter.
Macedonia were punishing Irelandâs turnover rate and used their strength in depth to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Ireland were still operating with a squad of 10 players, but Kris Arcilla was back in action and dished out three assists in the first half. It was a good half too for Cian Heaphy and his second quarter baskets were much needed.
Ireland trailed 43-30 at the break and led the game get away from them in the third quarter. Arcillaâs three-pointer and an Amadasun put-back were the only scores from play.
That left 24 points between the sides heading into the fourth, but to Irelandsâ credit they chased the game. Darragh OâSullivan tacked on a three-pointer as both David Murray and James Beckom joined Heaphy in double-digit scoring. A 9-0 run helped reduce the gap to just nine points with a minute remaining before Macedonia got the insurance basket.
