RESULT: Griffith Swords Thunder advance to Cup semi-finals
December 07, 2016
It was the clash of the titans this evening as two of the Men’s Super League top teams, Templeogue and Griffith Swords Thunder, went head-to-head in the quarter-final of the Hula Hoops National Cup.
In a nail-biter in the National Basketball Arena, it was Templeogue who had the lead at the break, 51-46, with Lorcan Murphy dunking his way to 21 points.
Jason Killeen dominated under the boards in the second quarter (and top scored for his side on 22 points overall), but it was in the third and fourth quarters where Swords' grit and determination really shone, as Jose Maria Gil Narbon stepped up to the challenge and hit some valuable scores (netting 30 overall), while Isasc Westbrooks took the lead from the point, driving Thunder's offence forward to see his side home to a memorable victory, 81-88, and send them into the Hula Hoops Cup semi-finals in January.
For Templeogue, it was their first loss of the season, yet they still remain unbeaten in League basketball and will be hoping to regroup ahead of their Super League clash against Garvey's Tralee Warriors on Saturday night in Tralee.
