Ireland U18 Women went head-to-head with the Netherlands once more on Sunday afternoon and made it two wins from two for the weekend as they managed to hold on and win out by two points in the end.
Another close and competitive game was on the cards for the supporters at the National Basketball Arena, as Ireland led proceedings at the end of the first quarter, 18-12.
Good defence from the Irish kept the Netherlands off the scoreboard until the clock had ticked under the five minute mark in the second, but they hit their rhythm almost immediately after that, with Julia Jorritsma proving key for the visitors from the three-point line to tie the game up at 28 apiece at half time.
Claire Melia and Maeve Phelan brought the crowd to their feet in the third quarter though, as they pushed through some hard-worked scores and soon had opened up a 51-43 point gap to take them into the fourth but again, the Netherlands were not going down without a fight and Jorritsma continued to up the pressure with long range shots seeing just one point in it (57-56) with just 1.23 minutes on the clock.
Again, Melia kept a cool head to put Ireland ahead 59-56 from the free throw line and added another well-worked score seconds later to leave it 61-56, but with 16 seconds to go, the Netherlands had worked the points back leaving it at 61-59 in favour of the Irish. Dayna Finn and Sorcha Tiernan were on hand to net from the free throw line as the Netherlands got into foul trouble and did just enough to edge Ireland in front, ensuring that a late buzzer beater three-pointer from the visitors was not enough to win the game and Ireland instead were victorious, 64-62.
Game 1 - Saturday, July 1st
The Netherlands: 46
Ireland Under 18 women's team stormed home to a 65-46 point win over the Netherlands in game one at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght on Saturday afternoon.
A superb all-round performance from the girls in green saw them weather the storm and a huge third quarter saw them take the lead midway through and drive home to victory.
Hard work under the boards from Claire Melia, Rachel Huijsdens and Maggie Byrne ensured that Ireland could open a gap in the third quarter after the sides ended all square at half-time. Strong shooting and cool heads kept the scoreboard ticking over for the team and they lead by eight (49-41) going into the last.
The squad pushed on in the last, with their superb defensive work setting them up for some nice scores to run out convincing winners in the end, 65-46.
