FIBA U16 Men's European Championships
Pool Game 3
Bulgaria, August 12th, 2017
Ireland Under 16 men continued to stamp their mark on the FIBA U16 European Championship Division B this morning when they drove home to a comprehensive 98-
“The team earned that win today,” said Head Coach, Pat Price. “They didn’t take a break at all in terms of focus and execution and when you have work rate like that you get that type of result.”
Today’s win came off the back of another big win for the squad on Friday afternoon which saw them overcome the Slovak Republic, and today’s win means they now have two wins from three pool games so far.
A superb display from the entire team today saw eleven of the twelve squad members get on the scoring, with the Ireland showing their passing and scoring prowess throughout.
“The contribution from our bench was terrific again and our sharing of the ball was excellent,” Coach Price reflected. “We got to give some guys a good rest today, our rotations were strong and we’ve a break tomorrow too so the guys can refresh themselves.”
Indeed, a close opening five minutes saw the teams neck-in-neck early on with Norway matching Paul Kelly, Tiernan Howe and Oisin Rice score for score until the midway point of the first. A strong run from the Irish though saw them widen the gap on the scoring, with superb breaks up the court and hard work on the boards seeing them ahead 23-15 at the end of the first.
The workrate and teamwork continued into the second, with Paul Kelly adding to his tally, Nathan Moore chipping in with some brilliant baskets and Daniel Arimoro extending the lead to hold a 59-31 point cushion at half time.
The third and fourth quarters were equally as impressive from the Irish as strong defence and good moves in transition saw the boys in green dominate at both ends of the court to run out deserving 98-56 point winners in the end.
The team have a rest day tomorrow before playing their fourth pool game on Monday and Coach Price looked ahead to that clash: “We have a very tough game ahead in Bosnia and Herzegovina. They have length, good pressure and size and we will need to play the fundamentals right.”
