Basketball Ireland Detailed Results

It was a massive weekend of basketball this weekend, as the Men’s Super League blew wide open with some big results secured across the board.

There were huge celebrations in Cork this afternoon as UCC Demons ran out one-point winners over Griffith College Swords Thunder (96-95) in an absolute cracker of a game at the Mardyke. Demons’ American, Lehmon Colbert came back to Irish basketball with a bang, bagging 34 points, while player/coach Colin O’Reilly was hugely influential once more, netting 24 points which, more importantly, included the winning free-throw.

“It was an exciting game again,” O’Reilly said. “These are the ones you have to win, we got a bit lucky at the end. They played the game perfectly for the last 22 seconds, and I’m delighted that we got the win as I don’t know if we would have been able to win it in overtime.”

You can listen to Dave Baker's reaction to the game here.

Meanwhile, the big local derby between Éanna and Black Amber Templeogue produced another big result, with Éanna overcoming their near neighbours 92-86, despite a 37-point game from Templeogue’s Lorcan Murphy.

“We were delighted to get a win against Templeogue who are a very good team and reigning league champions,” said Éanna Head Coach, Pat Glover. “We played really hard and smart throughout the game, putting in a solid performance.”

Elsewhere, Belfast Star were one of two teams to remain unbeaten in the Men’s Super League, running out 20-point winners against DCU Saints.

“I'm delighted, anytime you come on the road and win it’s great,” said Star Head Coach, Darren O’Neill. Listen to his full interview here, and hear from Joey Boylan here.

In the other results of the weekend, Moycullen came out of the IWA in Clontarf with a five-point win (61-66) over Pyrobel Killester, Garvey’s Tralee Warriors overcame Maree, while KUBS lost out to UCD Marian.

Basketball Ireland Women’s Super League

In the Women’s Super League meanwhile, Martin Conroy and his charges at IT Carlow Basketball wrote a piece of history today as, in their first ever Super League game, they came out with a 73-67 point win over NUIG Mystics in a nail-biting overtime game.

With nothing separating the sides at half time (35-35) or indeed at full time (60-60), Carlow had to dig deep to come up with the goods, especially with two players picking up injuries, and a relieved Coach Conroy was glad to hear the full time buzzer.

“It was an unbelievable win,” he said. “The girls were amazing to go down the stretch to take the win in the end. Losing two players to injury really puts a dampener on it for us, but I am so proud of my girls. Both teams put up a huge effort and played some amazing basketball. “
