RECAP: Belfast Star overcome league leaders UCD Marian
February 23, 2018
Belfast Star have blown the race for the Men’s Super League title wide open this evening as they overcame table toppers, UCD Marian, in Methodist College.
Star controlled the game from the off, taking a 22-7 point lead early in the first, and holding on to lead 45-38 by half time. A huge third quarter performance from UCD Marian saw strong shooting from Conor Meany, Mike Garrow and Neil Baynes put them right back in contention and they closed the gap to just six points (66-60) by the end of the third.
A determined Belfast Star though were not going to go down without a fight – especially at home – and Keelan Cairns and Paddy McGaharan drove them home to a memorable 92-81 point win in the end.
“We’re delighted to get a win," said Star head coach, Darren O'Neill. "It’s always nice to win at home, and this win was coming. I thought we should have beaten Templeogue last weekend, we were well up on them and gave the game away I think. The week before, we were up on Demons and gave that game away, so this win was coming."
"We jumped on Marian early on defensively and held them to five or six points after seven minutes of play, and we were able to score off our defence. You know with a team like Marian, with the quality that they have, that they will come back at you and we expected that and they did. They came back within six points in the third, and we did a good job in bringing it back to 10 points again. It was never going to be easy, when you play a team like Marian you have to play for 40 minutes and we did that tonight and we’re delighted to get the win."
Indeed, tonight's victory for Star now sees five teams at the top of the Men’s Super League table with five losses – UCD Marian, Griffith College Swords Thunder, Garvey’s Tralee Warriors, Pyrobel Killester and Black Amber Templeogue – ensuring that every game from now on is must win for each of them.
All eyes will now turn to the sports complex in Tralee tomorrow evening [Saturday] as Swords travel to face the Warriors, while elsewhere in the top five, Pyrobel Killester welcome UCC Demons and Black Amber Templeogue travel to Moycullen on Sunday.
