ROUND-UP: Action packed Hula Hoops 3x3 at Dundrum
May 12, 2018
DCU Saints and Ambassador UCC Glanmire were crowned men’s and women’s Hula Hoops 3x3 basketball champions this evening after a hugely competitive tournament at Dundrum Town Centre today.
It was an action-packed day across the boards, with two games finishing after overtime, and a number of nail-biting finales. For the two champions though, they were unstoppable, with DCU Saints finishing their group unbeaten and Glanmire winning two out of three in the group stages.
In the men’s competition, champions DCU Saints powered through the group stages, laying down a marker for the day early on when Shane Davidson bagged a buzzer-beating score to see them win out 18-17 against Black Amber Templeogue. They followed up this opening round win with a 12-9 victory over LYIT Donegal, before finishing the group with a 14-12 win over Killester to advance through to the semi-finals.
Saints were on a roll at this stage, and stormed through the challenge of UCD Marian (12-6), to advance to the final. There, they met a sharp shooting Moycullen side, but again, the combination of Martins Provizors, Graham Brannelly, Davidson and Conor Gilligan proved too much and it was five wins from five for DCU Saints and a Hula Hoops 3x3 trophy at the end of a busy day.“We’re delighted to have won,” Provizors said afterwards. “This event has been great. It was a big help to have the crowd here and it pushed us on a bit more in the end.”

Over in the women’s competition meanwhile, Ambassador UCC Glanmire showed off their 3x3 skills in style today, opening their tournament with a win over IT Carlow Basketball. Next up was the hugely anticipated clash with DCU Mercy in a repeat of this year’s Hula Hoops Cup final, which DCU Mercy edged by one point (6-5).
The Cork side got back to winning ways however, running out winners over Ulster University Elks in the final group game, before overcoming Killester in nail-biting semi-final 10-9 to tee up another hugely-anticipated showdown with DCU Mercy in the final.
Superb displays across the board from Grainne Dwyer, Casey Grace, Aine McKenna and Claire Rockall was enough to see them home to glory in the end as they managed to hold on to the smallest of leads and reverse the earlier result, to be crowned champions on a final scoreline of 10-9.
“It’s amazing to win, in general it’s always nice to win but the whole day here has been fantastic,” Dwyer said afterwards. “I’ve gone abroad to many of these competitions and it’s the exact same. To win with the four girls from the club is very cool too. DCU were outstanding today, but we were delighted to take that win.”
Sixteen teams from the Basketball Ireland men’s and women’s national leagues took part at the tournament in Dundrum, and speaking afterwards, Ian O’Rourke, Brand Activation Manager with Largo Foods stated: “Our very first Hula Hoops 3x3 championships were a tremendous success. Over 9,000 people engaged with the event here in Dundrum, which is fantastic. Our partnership with Basketball Ireland is going from strength to strength and we’re looking forward to continuing to grow basketball in Ireland.”
