Tough test for Ireland Senior Women in Poland
June 02, 2018
The Ireland Senior Women’s team faced a tough test in Poland at the weekend as they travelled for a two-game international friendly series against the hosts.
The squad tipped off the first game on Saturday evening, facing off against a well-drilled and skilful Polish side. A solid opening two quarters from the girls in green saw them hold the hosts within three points (30-27) as the clock ticked towards half time.
A quick regroup from the Polish side though saw them come out strong from a time out to lead at half time, 41-30. The hosts put in a huge third quarter display, stopping Ireland at every turn and keeping them to scoring just six points in the quarter, while they built up a solid cushion to lead 61-36 going into the last.
Despite the best efforts of the Irish in the last, the mountain was just too big to climb and Poland ran out 81-49 point winners in the end.
Game 2 was another tough challenge for the girls in green, with Poland coming out of the traps early to set a high and intense pace to the game, opening up an early 25-14 point lead at the end of the first.
Poland continued to keep the pace high, and despite good defense from the Irish, Poland held a 56-32 point lead at the end of the second.
A much-improved third quarter display from the Irish in this game, saw them battle hard and win some big scores under the boards in the face of a very physical Polish side, to see the score at 76-52 in favour of the home team going into the last. The mountain was just too big to climb in the fourth though, and despite another strong display, Poland ran out 100-69 point winners in the end.
