August 17, 2018
Ireland U16 women narrowly lost out to Romania, 50-57, in their second group game at the FIBA U16 Women’s European Championship, Division B, after a thrilling encounter. Both teams fought hard but in the end, Romania’s physicality gave them the edge over the girls in green.
Ireland started out at an intense pace and the Romanians found it difficult to keep up with them. Abigail Rafferty and Ciara Byrne contributed for the girls in green to give them an early lead. The pace of the game began to slow towards the end of the first and Romania came back to lead at the end of the quarter, 8-12.
Romania made a hot start to the second quarter and were able to maintain their lead throughout thanks to their star player Rebecca Lipovan. Romania played great defence in the second to limit Ireland’s scores but Erin Maguire and Hazel Finn were able to narrow Romania’s lead by halftime, 18-24.
Ireland fought hard in the third quarter with Maguire and Finn once again making shots but Romania slowly began to pull away as their defence was on point and they capitalised on the fast break to lead, 30-38, going into the final quarter.
Ireland fought their hardest in the final quarter with Fatimah Akorede and Hazel Finn pushing with intensity, however, they were unable to compete with Romania’s length and physicality down the stretch and Ireland lost out, 50-57.
Head Coach Karl Kilbride spoke after the game, “We showed great heart and enthusiasm, we were down 17 in the fourth and we brought it back to 7 in the last minute. Our work rate was through the roof. We were just unlucky not to convert the layups and open shots that we got”.
