RECAP: U16 Women dominant in victory over Kosovo
August 18, 2018
A blistering performance from the Ireland U16 women’s team saw them dominate a tough and courageous Kosovo team, as the girls in green won out 40-72 in their group phase clash this evening at the FIBA U16 European Championship Division B in Podgorica, Montenegro.
It was clear from the off that Ireland would have control of the game. Ciara Byrne and Hazel Finn started excellently for the girls in green, grabbing steals and scores throughout the first quarter. Kosovo tried to catch Ireland on the fast break occasionally but stellar defence stopped them in their tracks as Ireland lead, 13-21 at the end of the first.
The second quarter saw much of the same from Ireland as they dominated their Kosovar counterparts. Finn was the star again as she called plays and executed them for the Irish. Once again, Ireland played excellent defence which lead to them scoring quick points in succession and leading at halftime, 19-37.
Ireland kept Kosovo at bay in the third quarter and forced them to make multiple turnovers. The girls in green were relentless and continued to score shot after shot. Kosovo had a few good scoring runs but Irish head coach Karl Kilbride called time outs to settle his players and they lead going into the final quarter, 29-56.
The final quarter saw Ireland cement themselves as the better team as they stopped Kosovo from attempting to fight back at the lead. Finn and Fatimah Akorede were the standout players in the fourth as they guided their team to a 40-72 victory.
Speaking after the game, head coach Karl Kilbride stated; "We were excellent at times, we had 24 steals and forced 33 turnovers. We scored in transition a lot and we scored off turnovers. Kosovo are tough to play against and we haven't been shooting very well for the tournament so that slowed us down a little bit."
"Everyone played between twelve and nineteen minutes and it's brilliant that we have that depth, so overall we're happy with the result and most of the performance."
