Mini Basketball league and 3x3 tournaments in NBA this week
November 18, 2018
The National Basketball Arena is the place to be over the coming days as from November 15th to November 28th, 109 Dublin primary schools will come to the Arena to take part in a Mini Basketball 3x3 tournament and to compete in 38 league finals.
Primary Schools Mini 3x3 is based on the adult 3x3 game, with teams consisting of six players and equal emphasis is placed on playing, refereeing and table officiating.
In the League meanwhile, 76 school teams were clustered in local groups and played one another. They were then ranked 1, 2, 3 etc. in their cluster. The Dublin Primary Schools Mini-Basketball Board then paired 1s, 2s, 3s etc. for the upcoming finals at the National Basketball Arena. Over the course of the few days, there will be 1,110 children playing in the league, with 76 children officiating.
The League Finals use the 4v4 format with teams of 12 players and six periods. All children participate in two periods. This format encourages more fundamental movement learning opportunities. All children are awarded a League participation medal and the winning schools are presented with a trophy. Two children from each school act as scorekeepers and timekeepers. The Dublin Officials Association is providing referees, and Commissioners oversee the event each day. Over 2,000 supporters will enjoy the League Finals – most visiting the Arena for the first time.
This educational approach to sport and physical activity is very much in keeping with the Primary School PE Curriculum and the newly published National Sports Policy.
The ethos of Mini-Basketball is defined in the Primary Schools Mini Basketball brochure as “enabling children to learn, play and enjoy basketball in a supportive environment”. Furthermore, the brochure goes on to emphasise the “importance of age appropriate fundamental movement and basketball skills development” while avoiding the “negative aspects of competition for children”. Samples of negative aspects outlined in the brochure include; playing the best players only, complex tactics, early elimination structures and trying to win matches at the expense of player development”.

The Dublin Primary Schools Mini-Basketball Board offers appropriate learning opportunities to participate in Leagues, Just Play events, A and B Tournaments and Mini 3on3, to every school in Dublin.
