Bernard O'Byrne made President of Small Countries Commission
June 17, 2019
On the back of topping the poll in last month’s FIBA Europe elections, CEO of Basketball Ireland Bernard O’Byrne was today nominated and ratified as the President of the Small Countries Commission at the first meeting of the new board today in Munich.
The appointment to the Commission, which is to be renamed the Developing Countries Commission, will be for the next four years.
This committee organises FIBA European Championships for participating countries and allocates host countries for the tournaments. Equally importantly, it oversees and lobbies within FIBA for financial and logistical support to allow continued development to occur.
Speaking about the appointment, Mr. O’Byrne stated: “Firstly, I am honoured and delighted to gain this important role. I am immediately pleased to get a first ‘win’ with my suggestion to remove the ‘Small Nations’ label to be replaced with the far more accurate ‘Developing Countries’ title. I hope to get some more wins for this cohort of countries, which of course includes Ireland.”
