PREVIEW: Ireland U20 men play for a 19th place finish
July 20, 2019
The Ireland Under 20 men will play in their final classification game at 13:00 on Sunday in the FIBA U20 Men’s European Championship Division B in Portugal. Ireland will be playing for a 19th or 20th place finish having lost down the stretch in a cracking game against Romania Friday. They will face the loser of Luxembourg and Kosovo, who play tonight, Saturday.
The U20 men will be looking to focus on what went well for them against Romania. In Darragh O’Sullivan, who had twenty-three points on Friday, they have one of the top scorers in the tournament. Ably assisted by Eoin Nelson and Tadgh Crowley, it will be how much the rest of the team can contribute, Eoin McCann, Conor Liston and Cillian O’Driscoll have all had some solid scoring performances and if they can reproduce these again tomorrow, Ireland will fancy their chances. Defence will also be a priority and the men in green will be looking to produce a forty-minute performance.
Luxembourg or Kosovo will prove to be tough opposition. Luxembourg, who have 7-foot Lou Demuth and point guard Ben Kovac averaging some big numbers in this tournament will provide some fascinating match ups. Whilst for Kosovo it is the small forward Meriton Ismaili and power forward Dardan Kapiti that are the danger men.
Looking ahead to the game, head coach Mike Lynch stated: “Another tough loss yesterday. We are continuing to make basic mistakes and getting punished hard. Too many unforced turnovers and giving up second chance points in the first half led to a twelve point deficit which meant we had yet another uphill battle. While the players showed great effort in the third to level up the game, we were unable to handle the strength and consistency of Romania down the stretch. We are awaiting the result of tonight’s game to see if it’s Luxembourg or Kosovo we face tomorrow, as a group we are trying and hopefully we will get the result we want tomorrow”
The game will be live streamed on the Basketball Ireland Facebook page and FIBA YouTube channel. You can also follow live updates on the Basketball Ireland Twitter feed (@bballirl).
