RECAP: Ireland U16 Men lose out to Portugal
August 10, 2019
In Montenegro, Ireland U16 men lost to Portugal 78-52 in their third game of the 2019 U16 Men’s European Championships Division B campaign.
A lively first quarter saw a free-flowing game develop with Ireland and Portugal playing some attractive basketball. Captain Mike O’Mahony got Ireland off the mark with a driving lay-up, Mobi Ikegwuruka got his now trademark ‘and 1’ to start his scoring for the day, he finished with a double double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Portugal were moving the ball well and getting some good looks to drop and started to pull away before O’Mahony hit a big three with Ryan Djoussa and Clinton Efinda attacking the rim and getting rewarded to leave it Ireland 14 – 17 Portugal at the end of the first.
The second quarter saw Portugal find another gear defensively, they limited Ireland to just 10 points while finding their way to the basket seemingly at will. Irelands Sean Pollmann-Daamen was the only player with some offensive rhythm, he had 6 points with Ikegwuruka getting the other 4. Ireland changed up defence multiple times to try and disrupt Portugal and they did limit their second attempts but couldn’t get the ball to drop at the other end. It was 24 – 40 to Portugal at the half.
A poor start to the second half saw coach Pat Price call a timeout early as Portugal had 12 unanswered points and had their lead jump out to 28 before the Pollmann-Daamen brothers Tim and Sean got Ireland on the scoreboard. Portugal’s ability to force turnovers was a key aspect of the game and something Ireland struggled with. Ikegwuruka and Darragh Ferguson rounded off Irelands 12 points for the quarter and they were down 36 – 60 going into the fourth.
Ireland never dropped their head’s, they kept fighting and started to find some baskets with ND Okafor hitting 10 of his 11 points in this quarter to go with his 15 rebounds. However, the clinical shooting of Portugal ensured Ireland couldn’t eat into that lead and the game finished Ireland 52-78 Portugal.
It’s a welcome rest day tomorrow (Sunday) before Ireland face Cyprus on Monday at 5.15pm Irish time.
