August 22, 2019
The Ireland U16 women defeated Montenegro, 60-48, to advance to the Classification 9th-12th round at the FIBA U16 Women’s European Championship Division B in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Ireland made the better start to the game, opening with an 8-0 scoring run with the help of Hazel Finn and Kara McCleane. Paris McCarthy and Sarah Hickey provided assists for these scores until Montenegro replied, in the form of their star player, Marija Lekovic. Ireland maintained a strong lead until the end of the quarter when Montenegro cut the deficit to five points, 20-15.
Ireland kept their lead through the second quarter with scores from Finn and Miah Ryan. Montenegro came close to taking the lead until Hazel Finn nailed a long-range three pointer to keep Ireland on top. Scores were traded between the teams for the remainder of the half and Ireland went into the break leading 36-31.
Ireland came out of the break with intensity as they pressured Montenegro on both offence and defence. Finn, McCleane and Casey Mulvey forced the opposition to commit multiple turnovers, which in turn, led to scores for the girls in green. As the quarter came to an end Ireland had stretched their lead to eleven, 47-36.
Despite Montenegro’s best efforts, including ten quick points from Anastasjia Stjepcevic, Ireland were able to maintain their lead throughout the fourth quarter along with some great defensive pressure that allowed Ireland to come away with the victory.
After the game, Ireland U16 women’s head coach Andy Gill said, “In the second half we made some technical adjustments to guard Montenegro’s Lekovic. We also held them to only three offensive rebounds in the second. We’re very pleased with the result, we have an evening game tomorrow so we’ll have plenty of rest time and we look forward to the game against Slovakia or Luxembourg.”
Ireland awaits the result of Slovakia v Luxembourg to determine their opponents at 6:30pm Irish time tomorrow.
