RECAP: Ireland U16W fall to Slovakia in Classification 9th-12th
August 23, 2019
The Ireland U16 women suffered a 47-60 defeat to Slovakia in Classification 9th-12th at the FIBA U16 Women’s European Championship Division B in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Ireland opened the game with an 8-0 scoring run in the first two minutes, with scores coming from Sarah Hickey, Kara McCleane and Hazel Finn. Slovakia slowly fought back at Ireland’s lead with help from Barbora Kolesarova but the remainder of the quarter was filled with great defensive plays from both teams, leaving Ireland ahead at the end of the quarter, 9-7.
The second quarter brought a faster pace, as both teams used the fast break to gain multiple scores. Finn, Hickey and Kate Kelly picked up scores for the girls in green, while Slovakia used free throws to their advantage, along with strong drives to the basket to take the lead at half time, 22-26.
Slovakia built a twelve-point lead early in the second half thanks to scores from Kamila Jarosova and Vanda Kristlova but Ireland reacted quickly and cut that lead to just two points until Slovakia pulled away towards the end of the quarter, leaving Ireland down 35-46 going into the fourth.
Ireland fought their hardest to reduce Slovakia’s lead in the fourth, with Hickey, McCleane and Casey Mulvey contributing scores for the girls in green. However, good shooting from the Slovakians tied with foul trouble for Ireland allowed Slovakia to maintain their lead and run out eventual winners, 47-60.
After the game, Ireland head coach Andy Gill stated, “That was the first game out of seven that I felt we didn’t execute our offence to our potential but we’ll take the positives from that game and bring them forward to Israel tomorrow, who are capable of beating any team on their day. We’re looking forward and hopefully we can do ourselves justice in the last game of the Europeans.”
Ireland will face Israel tomorrow in Classification 11th-12th at 2pm Irish time.
