Basketball Ireland support new player welfare app
October 15, 2019
Basketball Ireland are supporting a new player welfare app that is helping monitor and manage the workload asked of young athletes.
SURPASSPORT is a powerful team management platform designed for coaches whose players play on multiple teams, especially when they represent school and clubs, to ensure that the demands placed on young athletes are progressive and sustainable. Using the app, coaches are able to track attendance and activity levels at sessions. This ensures that coaches across multiple disciplines and teams have a clear picture of what demands are being placed on their players, with the benefit of reducing risks of injury and burnout and promoting a player centric approach to session planning.
On top of the direct benefits from tracking activity, SURPASSPORT simplifies administrative and communications, allowing coaches/parents to coordinate effectively on workload, wellbeing and injuries, while meeting all data protection and safeguarding requirements.
The founder of SURPASSPORT, Adrian Geissel, created the app after his experience coaching underage GAA and wanting to understand what constituted a safe and appropriate level of sport. “Understanding each kids’ individual situation is especially important for kids aged between 10 and 14 years, as they start playing competitively in school, they’re old enough for midweek evening training and club matches become more competitive. It’s also the stage when their bodies are changing, and all the advantages and disadvantages this brings. Statistically, this is also the age with kids are most at risk of quitting sport altogether”.
Within Basketball Ireland, the Irish U16 Women’s team have used the app and their strength and conditioning coach Darragh Kennedy added “SURPASSPORT allows us to track the training load of our squad. With limited player contact over the course of an international programme, we can remotely monitor player activity levels, in particular volume, frequency and intensity, with the aim of ensuring they do not do too little or too much, by looking to optimize training load levels and also prevent injury”.
Kevin Foley, Basketball Ireland’s Health and Wellbeing Consultant, spoke about SURPASSPORT “The app is a great tool for player, parents and coaches alike to monitor the individuals overall activity levels and how it is impacting on their physical and mental stress so that we can better program sessions for optimum team and personal outcomes. One of the main components is that we can track enjoyment and be able to spot early if the athlete is having any issues on or off the court”.
Basketball Ireland have agreed a Special Offer from SURPASSPORT, only for affiliated Clubs and Schools: FREE “Setup & On-boarding” to help configure teams and structures, to import player detail and a “Coach / Mentor Orientation” workshop, normally worth over €300.
