Martin Aherne RIP: Ar dheis De go raibh a anam
May 11, 2020
Basketball Ireland expresses the sympathy of its members to the family and wide circle of friends of Martin Aherne following his recent passing.
Martin grew up in what has been referred to as the hot bed of Basketball on Corks Northside in the late 70s early 80s. Having initially played for GH74, Martin joined Neptune Basketball Club as a teenager. He went on to win a Billy Kelly Tournament as well as three National titles which preceded the National Cup as we now know it. He represented Ireland at underage level and later he seamlessly transitioned into coaching, leading Neptune to League success in the 2002 /2003 season. Although he was a proud Neptune member, he was always available to players of any club or school / college to offer any assistance he could. He had the ability to engage and debate in a Basketball conversation without bias. Martin will be a big loss not only to Neptune BC but to the wider Basketball community in Cork and across the country. A gentleman of the game.
Our sincere condolences to Martina, Aine and the Aherne and Kirby families.
