Club Focus: Killarney Cougars
July 08, 2020
“Ever since I joined the club my eyes were always set on National League”, Killarney Cougars player/coach Justin Tuason says the club are looking forward to taking their place in Division 1 of the Men’s National League for the first time next season.
The Cougars are one of four teams added to Division 1, three teams of those will make their debut – Killarney Cougars, Malahide and Drogheda Wolves. Meanwhile Titans Basketball Club return after a years absence.
“It was more about waiting for the right time and right opportunity. Luckily this summer we got both. The club have competed in national cup competitions on many occasions and were all delighted with Basketball Ireland’s decision to grant us the national league licence.” Tuason added.
The Cougars will be playing their home games at the Presentation Gym in Killarney. Tuason will have plenty on his plate, having to manage affairs on and off the court, but he’s looking forward to the challenge.
“Being a player/coach is a bit of a double-edged sword. I had the role for Division 1 Kerry League last season, so I know what to expect. Sometimes it will be difficult to see the game from both perspectives and to maintain the mental toughness to stay focused on the game. But also that focus it requires on each play can keep myself and my teammates engaged for the whole 40 minutes. I think as a new young team it’s vital that we have trust in each other and allow plenty of communication.”
Tuason says he will be adding to his coaching team in the coming weeks and outlined what the clubs goals are for the season.
“The most important thing for this season is that there’s growth for the club and individual players. Sometimes we can get lost in wins and losses, which takes away from the learning that has to be done regardless of the result. With that being said, I think a good goal for us is to protect our home court in Killarney every chance we have. If we do that and steal a few games on the road, then we’re looking at a great season.
