September 18, 2020
Basketball Ireland has today received clarification from Sport Ireland on Irish government guidelines issued earlier this week. See full guidance issued by Sport Ireland today, 18th September available to download below.
The Basketball Ireland ‘Return to Play’ group has issued some updated guidelines in response to the ever-changing protocols, surrounding best practice to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
For counties on Level 3 (Dublin), see below:
-For indoor sports, there will be individual training only and no exercise or dance classes.
-No matches or events can take place.
-However, there will be an exemption for professional/elite , which can take place behind closed doors.
For counties not on Level 3, see below:
-For all except elite squads (defined below) training pods of 6 must be used. If a coach can maintain social distance of 2 meters, he/she is not counted in the 6. If he/she goes into the Pod they count as one of the 6.
-Several Pods can exist in the same hall if they can maintain separation throughout.
-Players should not wear masks when training/playing or when sitting on the bench. Coaches need not wear masks, but must maintain social distance.
-Physios and other necessary staff must wear masks.
-Players must not cross train with different teams e.g. with U18 and U16, or with National League team and another club team.
Elite Squads: (These have exemption from the Pods of 6 regime)
-National League teams (including U20)
-All matches must be behind closed doors with the appropriate number of spectators depending on which Level of the government guidelines their area is on.
-Matches should be within the same grade e.g. National League v National League; U18 v U18 etc.
-Getting the sport back running again safely is the priority.
In all circumstances, the details of the guidelines issued by the government must be adhered to including the basic instructions on sanitising and social distancing.
Basketball Ireland’s Return to Play Group will hold their next meeting on Tuesday. Chair of the Group Charles Higgins said: “We welcome the clarifications issued by Sport Ireland, it allows our clubs to plan accordingly. We must maintain our vigilance in the fight against Covid19. Clubs are reminded that any Covid-19 cases involving those in basketball must be reported to the Return to Play group by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. I would like to reaffirm our gratitude to the basketball community who have been working so hard to keep our sport safe.”
