Basketball Ireland's Return to Play Group awaits clarifications
October 21, 2020
Basketball Ireland’s ‘Return to Play’ group has asked for and is awaiting clarification from Sport Ireland on a number of queries submitted by Basketball Ireland, following the government’s decision to move to level 5. A meeting of the government’s Sport Expert Group is due to be held tomorrow, where it is hoped the questions we’ve raised will be addressed in a sufficient manner.
We understand that the basketball community is seeking guidance on protocols and we would urge all those involved in the game to bear with us, as we seek answers from external governing bodies.
Among the clarifications sought from Sport Ireland are the parameters with training outdoors, the specifics of individual training, whether the 5km travel restriction applies to attend training, clarification on training for our elite level National League and international sides, along with guidance over our planned National League return.
Chairman of Basketball Ireland, Paul McDevitt, said: “Once again the new restrictions issued by the government have failed to adequately consider indoor sports. We are pursuing answers, but as you can imagine with over 50 NGB’s and other major sporting bodies also fielding questions, getting a swift response has been difficult. We hope to provide an update tomorrow, which will allow all involved in our game to move forward.”
Charles Higgins, Chair of the Return to Play group, said: “We are working hard to get answers to the multitude of questions posed by Basketball Ireland to Sport Ireland, so we can help clear up matters raised by the switch to level 5. The safety of the basketball community and beyond is at the core of what we’re doing.”
