Basketball Ireland's Return to Play Injury Reduction Programme
April 26, 2021
As outdoor basketball returns in the Republic of Ireland today, we are delighted to launch Basketball Ireland’s National 11-week RTP Injury Reduction Programme.
Co-Heads of Basketball Ireland Athlete Development, Pete Madsen and Kevin Foley, have been working closely with Dr. Siobhan O’Connor and Peter Lacey from the School of Health & Performance at DCU over the last three months to design and implement the programme.
The aim of the programme is to help reduce the risk of injury in basketball players on their return to play, due to the halting of indoor sports because of the global pandemic.
The programme has been designed to cater for athletes of all ages and abilities in a very progressive manner and will consist of three separate cycles. Cycle #1 is 3 weeks in duration.
Take the time to familiarise yourself with each cycle and be patient in how you progress through the programme.
"I’d like to thank Dr. Siobhan O’Connor and Peter Lacey from DCU’s School of Health and Performance, who have dedicated a lot of time and effort in helping Kevin and myself to put this programme together. The main focus is to aid our players adjust to life back on the court after a lengthy absence and help to avoid potential injury.” Pete Madsen said.
Kevin Foley added: “I’d like to echo those words of gratitude to Dr. Siobhan O’Connor and Peter Lacey. We are all keen to get back on to a court, but rushing back without listening to your body can lead to injury. This programme is for players at all levels and partaking in it will help decrease potential incidence of injury.”

Peter Lacey, from the School of Health & Performance at DCU said: “The Basketball Ireland Return to Play Programme is an injury reduction programme that aims to return basketball specific strength and fitness to players after a prolonged period of time away from training. Long periods of time away from sport can put some players at risk of injury so this programme aims to reduce those risks with specific training exercises and help improve performance when players get back on court. This is the first of three cycles in an 11-week programme, none of which require any special equipment so they are suitable to any player at home. A big thanks to Peder Madsen, Kevin Foley and Siobhan O'Connor who have put a lot of time and effort into putting this together for players around the country.”
