Hula Hoops Womenâs National Intermediate Club Championships Final
Muckno Lakers 56, Limerick Celtics 47
Muckno Lakers claimed victory in the Hula Hoops Womenâs National Intermediate Club Championships final with a 56-47 win over Limerick Celtics. The Castleblayney club are unbeaten in three and half years in the north east and stepped up to the national stage for the first time with a worthy win.
After some acclimatisation, it was Lakers who earned the first sizeable lead in the game. It didnât come until the third quarter as as Nadine Rice penetrated at will with Tanya McGrath and Kellie McCabe shutting down Celticsâ options on offence.
The Limerick side recovered through former Ireland international Michelle Aspell. The 40 year old was part of three Eurobasket qualifying campaigns from 2001-2009 and hit 10 points in a row on the fast break before Jenny Morrison beat the third quarter buzzer to narrow the gap to 37-35.
Muckno were quicker off the mark in the fourth. Tanya McGrath converted her own steal and hit the accelerator to create four points on the fast-break. Limerick Celtics deployed a full-court press to peg them back with Morrison providing the come-back platform but, Aspell aside, were short on big-game experience. It was Lakers who closed out the game with the 5-1 run.
Head Coach Gerry Kelly said: âThis side have a wonderful attitude. Our scrimmages are tough that comes from the players not me. It took us time to find out balance in the game but thank goodness Tanyaâs experience told.â
