Bord Gais Neptune welcomed DCU Saints to Neptune stadium on Sunday 22/01 at 2pm.
Neptune eager to redeem themselves after the local derby semi final cup defeat to UCC Demons started the first quarter well with Mark Mitchell opening the scoring for Neptune. Neptune finished the qrt leading 22 - 20 with Ron Thompson scoring 8 points for the home side and Provizors hitting 6 for the visitors.
DCU built up a commanding lead for DCU in the second qrt with Pat Glover and James Donnelly playing some good ball. Bord Gais Neptunes Ger Noonan played well in this qrt ensuring his team didn't fall further behind to a spirited DCU side.
After a half time talk with head coach Scannell Bord Gais Neptune resumed the contest with a renewed passion. Neptune reduced the half time deficit to 7 points with some noticeable performances from Neptunes young guns Mati Rudak & Roy Downey assisted by the ever reliable Ron Thompson and Ian Mcloughlin. DCU however were not about to capitulate just yet with Pat Glover leading his team during this period.
The 4th was a dogged affair and Bord Gais Neptune drawing level with 5 minutes to go once again led by some very good play from Ron Thompson and some huge 3 point shots from Neptunes Phil Taylor. Povizors & Glover continued to hurt Neptune and a big Karl Lacey bucket put the visitors ahead 71/70 with 3.30 remaining. Both teams traded baskets and Ron Thompson put the home side ahead by 1 point with 7.7 second to go much to the delight of the large home support.
However Bord Gais Neptunes joy was short lived as after a David Donnelly time out DCU found Glover on the baseline and he hit an awesome shot to put his side up by 1 point with 2.2 seconds on the clock.Neptunes Gary Walsh managed to get a shot off but it wasn't to be with the game finishing 86 / 85 to the visitors
